Belly dancing (also called – Raks sharki and means “Dance of the East” or “Oriental dance”), is at least 2000 years old. You can find bellydance in different oriental countries like Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria etc. This beautiful dance is done with the whole body, not just with the ‘Belly’. It is a wonderfully sensual and feminine dance with gracious movements of the arms, undulations of the torso and the hips, shimmies, snaky and strong muscular accents. Also very typical are the isolations of the different body parts; upper-, middle-, and lower body. Belly dance is used to expresses a woman’s femininity through emotions of joy, love, sadness or anger. The dancer moves on the music. Middle Eastern music is an expressive language of quarter tones and percussive rhythms, varying from slow and sensual to upbeat and playful. The dancer becomes the music, and translated it to her body as poetry. The dance patterns are simple yet dynamic. Apart from the choreographed dances, there is also room for improvisation!
